

Russian forward and Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin tied Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky for the number of goals (894) in the regular championships of the National Hockey League (NHL). Gretzky's record stood for 26 years.
Wayne Gretzky scored the 894th goal during his 1,487th game in March 1999. Alexander Ovechkin needed 1,486 games to reach the record mark.
Ovechkin began his NHL career in the 2005/06 season and is currently in his 20th season with the Washington Capitals. In 2018, the Russian won the Stanley Cup with his team.
