The match started not in favor of Stanislav Cherchesov's team: in the 11th minute, Sergei Ignashevich put through his own net as he tried to stop Ramos and did not see that the ball was going straight into him, and then flew from the defender's foot into the net.

But still, the Russians were able to recoup at the end of the first half. The Spanish defender Gerard Piquet played with his hand and the referee appointed a penalty, which was confidently realized by Artem Dzyuba. Thus, the teams left for the break with a score of 1: 1. The second half was controlled by the Spanish players, they possessed the ball more than 80 percent of the time, the Russians showed the packed defense. Nevertheless, the main time of the match ended in a draw.

After that, an extra-time was appointed, with a lot of dangerous moments near the gate of Igor Akinfeev. But he once again showed his amazing saving skills. Thus the extra time also ended in a draw.

In the penalty shootout series, Igor Akinfeev produced two saves. The result was 4: 3 in favor of the national team of our country.

Note that Spain met with Russia seven times and never lost.

The Russian team for the first time in its history reached the quarterfinals of the world championship. In the next round, the Russians will play against the winner of the Croatia-Denmark pair. The quarterfinal match will be held in Sochi on July 7. The match will begin at 9:00 p.m., Moscow time.
