Nighttime flare on Sun will bring strong magnetic storm to Earth
The expected magnetic storm will be the most powerful since March 2026.
Last night, a flare of the highest class X occurred on the Sun. As reported by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the maximum radiation was recorded on June 30 at 23:50 Moscow time.
The power of the flare was X1.1 — this is only 10% above the lower limit of the highest class. The flare did not occur in the largest active region, which remains stable, but in a neighboring group of sunspots. Despite the explosion's moderate strength, the active centers' location almost exactly on the Sun-Earth line makes the impact on the planet noticeable.
According to scientists' forecasts, the plasma cloud will reach Earth on July 2 between 21:00 and 24:00 Moscow time. The expected magnetic storm will be the most powerful since March 2026. Specialists predict disturbances at level G3 (strong), while storms at the highest level, G4, are not expected.
