Feathered weather forecasters: in Bashkortostan capercaillies promised early spring
In Bashkiria National Park, capercaillies appeared at lekking sites. As experts explain, the appearance of birds in February signals the rapid approach of spring. Males begin to visit lekking sites in advance, survey the territory, and gradually occupy familiar places before the start of the active breeding season. At this time, males begin to feed actively, flying out to gravel banks, and start "drawing" on the snow, leaving "sketches" (wing traces).
The first capercaillies in the national park were noticed two weeks ago, so a camera trap was installed. Almost immediately, a male capercaillie was caught in the frame. For now, he does not exhibit pronounced lekking behavior; he only moves around the area.
