In Birsk, a special commission will assess the possibility of opening an ice crossing over the Belaya River. The inspection is scheduled for next Monday, January 19, Mayor Yury Ivanov said.
As the city administration explained, organizing the ice crossing is under special supervision due to safety concerns. Under the weight of fallen snow, the ice near the shoreline sags, and water begins to seep to the surface. When temperatures rise, this ice layer turns into slush. Slush on water bodies is dangerous, as it is difficult to move across such snow-and-ice cover — vehicles may sink, and a person can literally be pulled under by the mass.
