New commemorative date has been established in Russia
At a plenary session, the State Duma adopted the first reading of the bill amending the law "On Days of Military Glory and Commemorative Dates in Russia."
A new date has been established in Russia: Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People committed by the Nazis and their accomplices during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. It will be observed on April 19.
State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin emphasized that this is a very important decision supported by all factions.
"Our duty is to preserve the memory of the heroism of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, who saved the entire world from the Nazis. And to prevent others from forgetting the truth about the atrocities of the Nazis and the heroism of the Soviet people," noted Volodin. "More than 13 million civilians of the USSR fell victim to the Nazi occupation." Millions of civilians were killed, burned alive, and tortured in concentration camps. No other country suffered such sacrifices during World War II as the Soviet people did."
