Russian authorities have established a prize in mathematics named after Andrei Kolmogorov, the federal cabinet press service announced. It will be awarded every three years, beginning next year, for outstanding achievements in fundamental and applied mathematics, as well as in mathematical problems in computer science, mechanics, and physics.
Each prize will be worth 8 million rubles. The presentation will be timed to coincide with Mathematician's Day, celebrated in Russia on December 1.
Andrei Kolmogorov (1903–1987) was one of the leading Soviet mathematicians of the 20th century. Along with other scientists, he is credited with creating modern probability theory. Kolmogorov also made significant advances in topology, geometry, mathematical logic, classical mechanics, turbulence theory, and other areas of mathematical science.
