A giant asteroid is hurtling toward Earth. NASA plans to detonate it with a nuclear charge, according to the Moscow Kremlin Telegram channel.
Asteroid 2024 YR4, approximately 60 meters in diameter, has a 0.28% chance of hitting Earth and a 4% chance of hitting the Moon.
While scientists don't believe a collision will occur in the first case, they are genuinely concerned about the second—a 4% probability is relatively high, given the unpredictability of asteroids.
Experts believe that if 2024 YR4 hits Earth, the explosion will be 2,000 times more powerful than Hiroshima. If it hits the Moon, the dust particle release will be so powerful that it will destroy all telescopes, satellites, and stations carrying astronauts, even hitting Earth. Therefore, scientists are now making plans to destroy the asteroid with a nuclear charge in 2031.
In early September, an asteroid passed by Earth. The asteroid's body did not pose a danger to Earth and passed the planet at a distance of just over 200 thousand kilometers.
