Ufa Mayor Ratmir Mavliev announced on social media that Ufa has been recognized as a "World Craft City." Bashkiria's capital has become Russia's first city to receive this international status. The list of craft cities began in 2014 and now includes about 60 cities from Iran, India, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and other countries.
One of the priority tasks facing Ufa is preserving folk crafts, and unique skills passed down from generation to generation. That is why an application was submitted to receive the status of a world craft city for artistic processing and painting on wood and stone. A delegation from the World Craft Council visited the capital in January of this year to evaluate the status.
Over the past few years, the conditions for business development in folk arts and crafts in Ufa have improved significantly. The city offers various traditional and modern crafts: artistic woodworking, wood painting, carpet weaving, hand-painted fabrics, stone processing, ceramics, felting, leather and fur processing, and miniature lacquer painting. About 400 Ufa craftsmen are engaged in various types of crafts.
