Scientists can subtract one second from world time, Sergei Donchenko, head of the All-Russian Research Institute of Physical, Technical and Radiotechnical Measurements, told RIA Novosti.
Earlier, Vitaly Palchikov, chief researcher at the same research institute, said that the Earth's rotation speed has been growing abnormally fast in recent years. Therefore, one second must be subtracted by 2029 to compensate for this effect.
As Sergei Donchenko noted, adding or subtracting a second has not caused any problems for a long time.
As the scientists explained, the Earth is constantly slowing down and speeding up. However, scientists do not know what this is connected to. Perhaps it is due to global warming, melting glaciers, and water mass redistribution.
