Republican AIDS Center turns 35

Republican Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS and Infectious Diseases celebrates its 35th anniversary.

The official history of the HIV epidemic in Bashkiria began in 1987 when the first case of HIV was registered through contact with the first AIDS patient in the USSR. Then, in 1987, the first eight contacts and two HIV-infected people were identified. In connection with this, measures were taken to organize a laboratory and diagnostic service for screening the population for HIV infection, Bashinform News Agency was told at the Republican AIDS and Infectious Diseases Center.

"On August 1, 1989, the Republican Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS was created under the Ministry of Health of the Bashkiria ASSR as an independent medical and preventive institution of a special type. The first committee for combating AIDS included very well-known and respected doctors of the republic. A separate book could be written about each of them,” emphasized the chief freelance specialist in HIV infection of the Ministry of Health of Bashkortostan, chief physician of the Republican Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS and Infectious Diseases Rafael Yapparov.

As Rafael Yapparov noted, the AIDS center has been the basis of the HIV prevention service for 35 years. The center carries out a set of measures to maintain people's health and provide medical and diagnostic, organizational and methodological, consultative, and preventive assistance to residents of Bashkortostan.
