April 7 marks Runet's birthday
The Russian segment of the Internet celebrates a milestone anniversary. On April 7, 1994, the .Ru domain was registered and entered into the international database of national top-level domains, and Russia was officially recognized as a state represented on the Internet.
The first site in the .ru domain zone was a catalog of pages in English and Russian languages, Russia on the Net.
In 2010, Russia registered the first Cyrillic domain .рф. Name registration began in November 2009—at first, it was available only to government agencies and trademark owners, but a year later, it was opened to everyone.
