Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning the dismissal of single parents with children under 16 years of age. The document on amendments to the Labor Code on February 14, 2024, was published on the official legal information portal.
From now on, employers will not be able, on their initiative, to fire single parents with children under 16 years of age, as well as other persons who raise children of this age without mothers. Previously, Russian legislation prohibited the dismissal of employees raising children under 14 years of age alone. The new norm increases the age limit to 16 years.
As explained in the accompanying materials to the law, children usually receive general education by age 16, so citizens who raise them alone until this age need additional protection from the state.
The law comes into force 10 days after publication.
