Farm animal labeling in Russia will become mandatory

On September 1, 2023, Federal Law No. 221-FZ “On Amendments to the Law of the Russian Federation “On Veterinary Medicine” came into force in Russia, which introduced the labeling and registration of farm animals. Data on all animals subject to marking must be entered into the Rosselkhoznadzor Horriot system. Animal registration will be carried out regardless of the form of ownership: legal entities, individual entrepreneurs, personal subsidiary plots (LPH), or citizens. Entering data into the system is free of charge, and the owner purchases marking tools. The owner must contact the city or regional veterinary service to do this. The Rosselkhoznadzor office for Bashkiria reminds us of this.

The animals subject to mandatory labeling include cattle, horses, donkeys, camels, bees, pigs, sheep and goats, chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, ostriches, deer, fur animals, rabbits, and fish. Each type of animal has a deadline by which they must be marked and registered. Thus, cattle must be marked and registered no later than September 1, 2024. By the same date, horses should be marked and registered. However, this period has been extended for horses kept on private farms. Owners of private household plots must mark and register horses no later than March 1, 2025.

Owners of private household plots that keep chickens, ducks, turkeys, and other farm birds will also receive a deferment. If poultry farms must mark and register all livestock no later than September 1, 2024, then private farms with more than 10 birds must do this by September 1, 2026. For small private household plots, the deadline for registering birds was extended to September 1, 2029. Pigs will need to be registered by September 1, 2024. Bees – by September 1, 2025. Identification will allow you to track the entire life cycle of the animal.
