New COVID-19 strain “Pirola” has begun to spread in Russia.
Ten cases of infection with the new strain of COVID-19 “Pirola” have been identified in Russia. This was announced by the Head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, during her “Government Hour” speech at the Federation Council.
“Until November 3, we had not registered this virus in Russia,” said Anna Popova.
According to her, all identified cases are imported. It is expected that Pirola will continue to spread throughout the country.
The first cases of infection with the new strain were detected in France in August 2023. The World Health Organization has placed this virus variant under surveillance because more than 30 Spike gene mutations have been identified in it. This is slightly less than the rather infectious Omicron. The Spike gene is responsible for unlocking cells for pathogens to enter. The presence of many of these elements makes the virus highly contagious.
The Head of the federal Rospotrebnadzor earlier reported that vaccination against COVID-19 is unnecessary this season, Bashinform News Agency wrote.
