Victory Day is most important holiday for Russians

The All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center presented data from a survey of Russians timed to coincide with Victory Day. According to sociologists, most Russians call Victory Day the most important holiday (65%). Until 2018, New Year was in the lead.

63% of respondents associate the May 9 holiday with a military parade, followed by the St. George ribbon (58%), the Immortal Regiment action (54%), the eternal flame (45%), songs of the war years (43%), a solemn salute (38% ). A third of fellow citizens pointed to the banner of Victory (33%), orders, medals, and red carnations (31% each). Such options as front-line porridge (22%) and “People's Commissar's One Hundred Grams” (15%) were mentioned less frequently.

As the study showed, nine out of ten Russians (89%) have relatives who participated in the Great Patriotic War; the entire observation period since 2004 has remained in the 83-91% range. Another 6% admitted that they do not know whether any of their family members fought, say that their family members did not take part in the Great Patriotic War, and only 4% of our fellow citizens did.

The percentage of Russians aware of their relatives who participated in the war this year amounted to 39%. The maximum was noted in 2004 - 50%. The older the Russians, the more they know about their relatives' participation in the Great Patriotic War, which is due to the closeness of the life of the older generation to the war years.

Among citizens over 60, every second is well aware of the details of their relatives' participation in the war, which is twice as much as compared to 18-24-year-olds - 26%.
