First domestic smallpox vaccine NIOCH-14 was registered in Russia

Scientific Center "Vector" of Rospotrebnadzor, together with the Nikolay Vorozhtsov Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry, developed and patented the first domestic smallpox vaccine "NIOCH-14". This was reported by the press service of the federal department. The drug will be administered orally.

Preclinical studies have shown the safety and effectiveness of the drug in the fight against all types of orthopoxviruses, including monkeypox. In addition, the first phase of clinical trials was successfully carried out on 90 volunteers aged 18 to 50 years. This made it possible to determine the dose and regimen of application. The mechanism of action of the drug is to block the formation of the shell of the virus, which stops the release of the virus and its further spread in the body.

"NIOKh-14" is a strategic drug that will be kept in the state reserve and used only if necessary," Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement.
