President of Russian Academy of Sciences: There are still many mysteries in Shulgan-Tash Сave

Tatyana Aksyutina

President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev, after visiting the Shulgan-Tash historical and cultural museum complex and the cave of the same name, told reporters in an interview that he and his colleagues received such a wonderful gift just on their first visit to Bashkortostan.

“Indeed, we have already begun to discuss, regarding the future, what kind of international collaborations can be created. On the other hand, the findings that have been made here can be presented more prominently in the international scientific space. Although now it has become not so easy to do this, but this is actually humanitarian historical knowledge, which is recognized by everyone and, apparently, is best suited to be promoted in the international arena. It seems to me that there are still a lot of mysteries here. My colleagues said that 35-40% of the still unfound, undiscovered are such picturesque artifacts,” said Alexander Sergeev.

According to the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, there are many mysteries in the cave, not only from the pictorial point of view of rock art.

“Generally speaking, this is a historical question, how it all turned out over time, and, probably, the answer can only be after the studies conducted here have been completed. It is very pleasant that you have created your republican center here in the republic.

It seems to me that there is one more technical moment. In terms of studying, preserving cultural heritage, more and more new, original methods are now appearing, which give very promising results, including in terms of building an image structure, depth. It is possible that there are some three-dimensional images here, just one artist painted, another 100-200 thousand years later painted something else, and a whole three-dimensional structure is obtained.

There are several such caves in the world where such a three-dimensional structure has now been deciphered. And this already shows how the skill of the artist has changed over time from century to century. I would love to see such discoveries here too.

Thanks again to Radiy Khabirov, Head of the Academy of Sciences of Bashkiria and our fellow scientists for their enthusiastic work. This is indeed a unique object,” Alexander Sergeev said.

The President of the Russian Academy of Sciences noted that the Bashkir nature was another gift. “Nature is also a gift to us. I would love to come back here at other times of the year too."
