Rospotrebnadzor called rapid spread of omicron strain frightening
Already 25 patients with omicron have been registered in Russia.
The rate of spread of the omicron coronavirus strain in the world is causing concern. The head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, told RIA Novosti about this today.
“We see the rapid development of the situation in the UK, in Africa, where more than 75% of detected cases are accounted for omicron every day, the same is in South Africa. The growth rates are frightening in their danger and risk,” she said.
A day earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said 25 patients with omicron were registered in Russia.
The new SARS-CoV-2 strain was first discovered in Botswana and South Africa in mid-November. It contains dozens of mutations in the S-protein, which is necessary for the pathogen to infect cells. It is believed that it originally developed in an immunocompromised person - probably infected with HIV.
