Newborns will be tested for 36 genetic diseases in Russia

Newborns in Russia will undergo neonatal screening for 36 diseases. The Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Mishustin, announced this at a meeting at the Kulakov Research and Development Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Perinatology.

The extended screening will be included in the program of state guarantees for the provision of free medical care to citizens.

According to Dmitry Trofimov, director of the Institute of Reproductive Genetics at the Kulakov Center, such measures will reduce infant mortality by 15 percent.

"More than nine thousand children's lives will be saved in ten years. Families will be able to receive the necessary qualified medical and genetic assistance with further family planning. The load on hospitals and intensive care units will also decrease," he said.

Currently, babies are being tested for five hereditary diseases in the maternity hospital. For 15 years, 20 million children were checked, diseases were detected in about 15 thousand.

In Russia, neonatal screening began in 1993; then, there were only two diseases in the test.
