More than 30 thousand archeological monuments remain underexplored in Bashkiria

In Bashkiria, about 4 thousand archaeological monuments have been identified (including borders). Scientists are sure that this is no more than 10% of all existing in the region. For the past several years, employees of the Scientific Center for the Protection and Use of Cultural Heritage Objects have been using aerial geodesy and photogrammetry - digital processing of aerial photography - for this purpose. So they manage to find archaeological sites without excavation.

Over the past three years, scientists have established the boundaries of 300 monuments - known and new. These data are reflected in the Cadastral map.

Young scientists say that the work is carried out from April, sometimes to December, until the ground is covered with snow. Thus, last season they discovered about 50 mounds and two large burial sites.

"The most interesting thing is when you manage to find places where people lived. Last year we took part in excavations in Khaibullinsky and Abzelilovsky regions. Two settlements of the Bronze Age - 20-18 centuries BC were discovered. We investigated the burial site of the early Iron Age (5-4 centuries BC), where there were eight burials with arrows, weapons, beads with golden foil, bronze mirrors," the archaeologists said.

Last year, work was carried out to determine the boundaries of the monuments in the territory of the landscape museum-reserve "Irendyk" in the Baymaksky region. There are about 300 archaeological sites on an area of 25 thousand hectares. In the coming season, scientists plan to take part in their excavations and work on a digital "portrait" of another large historical and cultural space - the Shulgan-Tash reserve.
