20% do not fully recover after coronavirus - doctors

Scientists and doctors continue to study the new coronavirus infection. Recently, American scientists have concluded that about 20% of those who had COVID-19 do not fully recover. They have a post-COVID syndrome.

"Most often, it occurs in elderly people and those suffering from chronic diseases, but young people are not immune from it," Nikolai Kryuchkov, an immunologist, Ph.D. explained. "It happens in different forms, usually not severe manifestations, but still a significant percentage of people have them. The older a person is, the more chronic diseases they initially have, the more likely it is that certain disorders will persist".

Some people confuse the post-COVID syndrome with ordinary weakness: concentration is impaired, sleep, memory problems, and even depression are also observed. Some people have heart problems due to the direct impact of the virus and an indirect one due to a blood clotting disorder.

"If the lungs are severely damaged, respiratory failure, chest and abdominal pain, and digestive disorders may persist. There may also be general muscle- and headaches," Kryuchkov said.

The immunologist concluded that people with the post-COVID syndrome are not carriers and distributors of the virus, but there is a danger to their health.
