Cellular immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus may appear both in those who have had a new coronavirus infection and in those who have escaped the disease. This is the conclusion made by Russian scientists.

As the researchers explained, blood samples taken before the pandemic in the spring from those who did not suffer from COVID-19 infection signal a significantly higher number of T cells recognizing the virus. According to the Izvestia newspaper, this is because those who escaped the coronavirus faced it one way or another.

It is still difficult to fully explain the origin of immunity in those who have not been ill. There are suggestions that the cause is the asymptomatic course of the infection.

“The T-cell response can be observed due to the fact that immunological memory cells are activated for other coronaviruses that existed around us before 2019,” Alina Shomuradova explained, an employee of the National Medical Research Center for Hematology.
