Successful blood plasma transfusion to COVID patient in Bashkiria

In Bashkiria, the first successful plasma transfusion to a patient with COVID-19 from patients who had the new coronavirus was performed. It is reported that at the end of April, several citizens of the republic responded to the call to donate plasma. Blood sampling and plasma collecting from COVID-19 convalescence donors were carried out by the Republican Blood Transfusion Station (RSPK) together with Bashkir State Medical University.

“On May 9, on the day of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the first transfusion of anti-COVID plasma was carried out at a clinic of Bashkir State Medical University under the Russian Ministry of Health,” the Blood Transfusion Station reports.

According to clinical and diagnostic data, and according to doctors, the patient who received treatment with anti-COVID plasma has positive changes. The fact is that the plasma of the recovered patients contains antibodies to the virus, which, when administered to the patient, help the body fight the virus and have a powerful therapeutic effect. During plasma transfusion, the patient receives ready antibodies to the virus; passive immunity is formed.

Doctors also appeal to citizens who had the new coronavirus with a request to become plasma donors (a month after recovery) and thereby to save the seriously ill patients in medical hospitals of the republic.
