Russian scientists created test strips for COVID-19 analysis in 15 minutes

Russian scientists from the Federal Research Center, "Biotechnology Fundamentals" of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), have developed a prototype express test for the detection of the new coronavirus infection and the presence of immunity to it. It is reported that production may be launched in the coming month.

"Created kits are immunochromatographic test strips for the determination of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in blood, plasma, or human serum. These tests allow separate detection of IgM and IgG antibodies - the presence of IgM indicates the active phase of the disease, and IgG in a person without symptoms may indicate that they have already been ill and have immunity, ” Interfax cites the RF Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Such tests can be used in an off-laboratory setting and without the involvement of health workers. The result in the form of colored lines on the test strip is obtained within 10-15 minutes.

It is known that a test prototype is now ready, and experimental samples have been tested on the patient sera. It is noted that the first results indicate the effectiveness of the test.

The development is carried out with the participation of leading Russian research centers, including the National Research Center for Hematology of the Ministry of Health of Russia, the V.A. Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology RAS, Academicians M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry RAS and the Faculty of Biology of M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University. The scientists are supported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Education and Science RF.
