When patients with COVID-19 will be treated with blood transfusion in Bashkiria

In Ufa, at a briefing of the Ministry of Health RB on the coronavirus situation in Bashkiria, questions were asked regarding the treatment of those infected. In particular, whether doctors consider a possibility of blood transfusion, as there is a discussion in social media and the press that mechanical lung ventilators are not so effective in treating the coronavirus as a blood transfusion. The Minister of Health RB, Maxim Zabelin, answered that treatment with the blood transfusion was indeed under discussion.

“Moscow colleagues have the first experience with transfusion treatment. The option of blood transfusion is still of a research nature. Our blood transfusion station and Bashkir State Medical University are working on this issue; we are studying and exchanging practices with colleagues. At the moment, we don’t have the experience of blood transfusion [in the coronavirus treatment]. However, in the plans, if this is approved by the methodological recommendations of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, we will be ready to carry out this type of treatment as well,” the minister said.

As previously reported, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is also effective in the treatment of COVID-19. There are two such devices in the republic - they are installed in the Kuvatov Clinical Hospital and the Demsky Hospital. The head of the regional Ministry of Health clarified that there were no indications for using the ECMO apparatus for patients with the new coronavirus yet.
