Ufa doctors performed complex surgery on child’s brain to remove epileptic focus

Ufa doctors performed a very complicated brain operation - surgeons of the Republican Children's Clinical Hospital removed an abnormal focus of epilepsy in the cerebral cortex for the child.

A nine-year-old patient had to take anticonvulsants for seven years of his life. At the age of two, he was diagnosed with pharmacoresistant epilepsy. To help the boy, doctors removed this abnormal focus, VGTRK (All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company) reports.

“We conduct surgery in 10-12 patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy for a year. The success of these operations is great: in up to 80% of cases, seizures stop, and a person begins to live a full-fledged life”, said Airat Timershin, head of the neurosurgical department of the Republican Children's Clinical Hospital, the chief non-staff specialist in pediatric neurosurgery.

In Bashkiria, such operations are done only at the Republican Children's Clinical Hospital. Using an operating microscope with high-precision optics, neurosurgeons hit precisely the target and remove pathological areas without harming the brain.
