Russian scientists have proposed new method of combating serious diseases

Russian scientists have proposed a new way of combating severe diseases such as HIV, and hepatitis B. Experts commented on whether humanity can get rid of HIV and hepatitis B, Radio Sputnik (Moscow) reports.

Vadim Pokrovsky, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the Federal Scientific and Methodological Center for the Control and Prevention of HIV Infection, Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, notes that a whole range of methods should be used to treat infectious diseases such as HIV or hepatitis B. One of the directions is gene therapy, it will allow treating viral infections that are embedded in the human genome.

According to him, now the infection caused by the hepatitis C virus is treated quite successfully because this virus does not integrate into the genome. Hepatitis B virus and HIV can be treated with gene editing, affecting the virus itself, said Vadim Pokrovsky.

There is another direction - to change the human genome itself, to create the innate immunity. According to the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, some Europeans in Northern Europe are not susceptible to HIV, as they have a unique gene that provides this immunity. The expert stressed: we need a complex of different methods to get rid of all diseases - one new method will not be enough.
