It is better for Russians to refrain from traveling to Georgia until the situation stabilizes. RIA Novosti was told this by the First Deputy Chairman of the committee of the Federation Council for International Affairs, Vladimir Dzhabarov.
“I would advise Russian tourists to refrain from visiting Tbilisi although in recent years Georgia has become one of the favorite places for Russian travel. Why take the risk? Let the Georgian authorities settle the situation first,” the senator said. “It is possible that in the coming days the situation in Tbilisi will be tense”.
According to Vladimir Dzhabarov, what is happening in Georgia now is “an exclusively domestic matter” of this country.
“Russia was used as a pretext for the opposition’s protests,” he added.
In Tbilisi, protests began on Thursday, June 20. The protesters opposed the participation of Russian delegates in the session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy. In the afternoon, the radicals seized the parliament building, where the Russian representatives were, in the evening they again tried to storm the parliament. Members of the opposition joined them. They demanded the resignation of the government. During the protests, more than 70 people were injured.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow was outraged by the actions of the radicals who disrupted the work of the Inter-Parliamentary General Assembly of Orthodoxy in Tbilisi. The Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said that the actions of the Georgian leadership during the assembly session contradicted the norms of organizing international events.
