Rosprirodnadzor head spoke about environmental situation improvement in Sibay

UFA, 6 June 2019. /Bashinform News Agency/ translated by Tatiana Aksyutina/.
The ecological situation in the city of Sibay, where a high-alert regime has been in effect since December 2018 due to smog and smell of sulfur, is no longer so critical. Svetlana Radionova, the head of Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage), told about it on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
“There [in Sibay] real improvements are underway, we receive reports every Monday. We are monitoring them, there is no currently such critical situation as it was in the winter. We hope that the ambient temperature will not allow the spontaneous mine fire to disperse in high latitudes”, the TASS news agency cites the head of the supervisory authority.
Recall, since December 2018, it was established a high-alert regime in Sibay due to smog and smell of sulfur, caused by smoldering of ore due to oxidative processes in the inactive mine. The flooding of the quarry was completed on March 26; the water level rose by 80 meters from the reference point.
Earlier, the Bashinform News Agency reported that the Sibay quarry would be further flooded. It was decided to flood the mine above the level of 469 meters to prevent the development of oxidative processes. The date of the quarry re-opening will be determined in May.
