Ufa cardiologists conducted unique joint heart cryosurgery

Joint cryosurgery on the heart took place in Ufa, at the Republican Cardiology Center. Bashkir cardiovascular surgeons held a master class for colleagues from the Volga regions, the press service of the Ministry of Health of Bashkortostan reports.

“The surgery is performed in case of atrial fibrillation. In this disease, the atrium beats in an irregular rhythm, which leads to fatal complications in the form of a heart attack and stroke. This operation is considered one of the most difficult in endovascular surgery, and Ufa occupies the leading position in the Volga region in the number of these operations. And we with our colleagues came here from Tatarstan to study”, says the X-ray surgeon Irek Sharipov from Naberezhnye Chelny.

Until recently, Ufa doctors treated this disease with radiofrequency catheters. Three years ago they introduced a cryoballoon technique. The republican cardiac surgeons conduct over 100 cryosurgeries per year. During the medical intervention, the pulmonary vein ostia are frozen with refrigerant at a temperature of minus 50 degrees Celsius. In this case, the patient is often conscious under local anesthesia.

In Russia, the number of people in need of such medical intervention is five to six times more than the number of operations performed. The cost of each procedure is from 250 to 700 thousand rubles, depending on the complexity. Patients have it for free at the expense of the Obligatory Medical Insurance Fund.
