Bashkortostan Health Minister: there are no fatal cases related to emissions in Sibay

Bashkortostan’s Minister of Health Maxim Zabelin denied information from a number of media outlets about alleged deaths in connection with the unfavorable environmental situation in Sibay.

“There are no deaths associated with emissions from burning dumps in the Sibay quarry. We consider these messages unsubstantiated”, he said.

Earlier, RBC TV channel reported that "residents of Sibay connect at least three deaths of children with smog that hang over the city", adding that "official expertise does not confirm this version".

The minister noted that there was no surge in incidence in the city, there was only a feeling of discomfort among people and, according to monitoring of the Federal Service, the general pollution of the environment slightly exceeded the maximum permissible concentrations of harmful substances.

“The necessary forces and means are available there. According to the instructions of the head of the republic, Radiy Khabirov, specialized doctors arrived to conduct in-depth medical examinations and provide assistance. For the week of their work there, we have not revealed a single case related to emissions to the environment. There are complaints related to the exacerbation of chronic diseases, and related to discomfort due to the presence of smell”, said Zabelin.

Recall that in Sibay, a high-alert mode is in effect since November last year. Due to the oxidation of ore in the unexploited copper ore mine of the local UGOK (part of the UGMK Mining Holding), there is a strong pollution of air.
