Radiy Khabirov regarding smog in Sibay: measures taken by UGOK are insufficient

On January 15, during a working visit to the city of Sibay, the Acting Head of Bashkiria, Radiy Khabirov, severely criticized the management of the UGOK (Sibay branch of Mining and Processing Plant JSC) and the city authorities for not taking proper measures to ensure good environmental situation in the city.
“We see that people are very much concerned about air pollution in Sibay, and this problem is not being solved adequately”, Khabirov said.
Yaudat Bikkinov, director of the Sibay branch of UGOK, reported that the smoke area was currently 2000 square meters and it used to reach the highest of 6000 square meters.
“We measure the temperature of the smoldering source, although we cannot yet determine it online, only after computer processing,” said Bikkinov. “We are also exploring the possibility of installing a ventilation unit either at the bottom of the quarry or on the surface – on the viewing platform”.
But, as it turned out, the calculations for the ventilation equipment installation have not even been carried out yet.
Residents of Sibay complained to Radiy Khabirov about the late notification of an increase in the concentration of the harmful substances in the atmosphere of the city. For example, the notification of yesterday's morning smog was received only at 3 pm, while people are still not notified about the emissions at 8 am today.
Addressing to the head of the city, the mayor of Sibay, Rustem Afzalov, Radiy Khabirov noted his poor explanatory work with the residents.
“People need explanation and true information,” he said. “We will definitely make an open monitoring system on emissions into the atmosphere so that people can clearly understand the limits of emissions into the atmosphere.”
Since today, the head of the republic transferred the local administration operation to the headquarters regime so that every evening and every morning a report on the concentration of pollutants and the measures taken would be presented.
Recall that in Sibay, a high-alert mode is in effect since November last year. The strong air pollution occurred due to the oxidation of ore in the closed copper ore mine.
Residents of Sibay are recommended to stay inside, use respirators, gauze bandages, to rinse eyes, nose, and mouth with water, moisten the air in the room and drink more fluids.
