Basic international units - kilogram, kelvin, ampere and mole will be revised in Paris

On November 16, 2018, the long-term work of the world scientific and technical community on revising the basic units of the International System of Units (SI) - kilogram, kelvin, ampere, and mole will be summed up in Paris at the 26th General Conference on Measures and Weights. The update will affect such units as candela, second, meter, the press service of Rosstandart reports.

Now all the units will be determined not by physical objects of the macro-world, but by the fundamental constants of nature — the atom and quantum.

“The completion of the SI revision is a historic milestone, the second since the adoption of the International Metric Convention in 1875. We are talking about the final abandoning from the SI connection with artifacts. In fact, a new system of units is being adopted, which will be used in almost all countries of the world”, said Dr. Martin Milton, Director of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.

Experts believe that the transition to the new SI will accelerate the development and implementation of innovative solutions and technologies in science and industry, including reducing the cost of many high-tech processes. More accurate temperature measurements will help to improve the monitoring and prediction of climate change. Determining a second in an atomic clock will allow accurately locating an object in-situ, which is important, for example, in ensuring the safety of unmanned vehicles.
