Bashkiria transplantologists are preparing to make pancreas transplant

UFA, 12 October 2018. /Bashinform News Agency, Rozaliya Valeeva/ translated by Tatiana Aksyutina/. In the next two years, transplantologists from Bashkiria are planning to conduct a simultaneous transplant of pancreas gland and kidney simultaneously.

“Technically, we are ready for this transplantation; currently we are actively forming a waiting list. Everything will depend on a donor. We plan that in the next two years we will conduct the first surgery,” Rifat Nuriahmetov, the chief visiting transplantologist at the Ministry of Health of Bashkiria told the Bashinform agency.

The pancreas transplant is indicated for patients with diabetes who have lost their kidney function as a result of their illness. This is a difficult surgery, which now is necessary for 20 residents of Bashkiria. According to Rifat Nuriahmetov, such operations are already successfully performed globally.

Total, there are 150 people in the waiting list of donor kidneys, 67 people wait for liver and 17 for heart transplants.

In early October, three liver and kidney transplants were performed, the transplant surgeries were successful, the patients were already transferred from intensive care to ordinary wards for rehabilitation.

In Bashkiria, three heart transplants, three liver transplants, and about 38-40 kidney transplants are performed every year. Hearts are transplanted at the cardiology center, and the liver and kidneys are transplanted at the Kuvatov Republican Clinical Hospital. Also, the transplantation center works in the Republican Children's Clinical Hospital, there is an average of one transplant per year.

Since 2013, 13 liver and 16 heart transplants have been performed in Ufa. Patients live a full-fledged life. According to the number of kidney transplants, Bashkortostan ranks third in the country (excluding federal medical institutions), and ranks 13th in the number of liver and heart transplantations. By general indicators, Bashkortostan is among six leading regions in the field of transplantology.
