Ropes produced in Beloretsk were used in "Sibir" nuclear icebreaker construction

UFA, 18 September 2017. /Bashinform News Agency/. The steel ropes by the Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant (BMK) were used in construction and equipment of the first serial nuclear icebreaker Sibir, project 22220. The vessel built by order of the State Corporation Rosatom will be launched in St. Petersburg on September 22.

BMK has been cooperating with the Baltic shipbuilding plant for about five years. The company supplies steel ropes of various diameters, including zinc coated wires. This coating provides resistance to corrosion in harsh environments and extends the life of ropes.

This year about 50 tons of steel ropes with diameters from 6 to 65 mm were supplied to the shipbuilding company. BMK cables are used in lifting mechanisms, as well as for equipping civil and military ships and vessels.

The first serial nuclear icebreaker Sibir was constructed on May 26, 2015. A new vessel is one of the most powerful ships of this type in the world. It is capable to break ice of 2,8-2,9 meters thickness along the course of the movement at a steady speed. The Sibir is intended for year-round navigation in the Western region of the Arctic, in shallow areas of the Yenisei and Ob Bay, towing of ships, as well as assisting and performing rescue operations in ice conditions and on clean water.
