First in Bashkiria Donor Breast Milk Bank opens in Ufa

UFA, 8 June 2017. /Bashinform News Agency, Gulfiya Akulova/. Today in Ufa, on the basis of the Republican Children's Clinical Hospital, the first Donor Breast Milk Bank opens in Bashkiria. The project is organized jointly with the "Nashi Deti" Charitable Foundation for donations of citizens. The project cost was more than 400 thousand rubles.

A special laboratory will collect, store and distribute donor breast milk among those newborns that need it for special medical reasons. Selection of donor mothers will be made from those recently delivered women, which are in the neonatal ward of the clinic. After expressing the milk is pasteurized according to a special technology. At the same time, all nutrients are stored in it completely, and all known pathogenic viruses and bacteria are deactivated. Then the milk is poured into containers, cooled in a refrigerator and frozen in the freezer. A recipient child receives his portion of donor milk on the prescription of the doctor.

According to medical data, one in ten babies is born prematurely. For such newborns, it is vital to receive breast milk. But every second mother of a premature newborn is not able to give him her breast milk at the first time after childbirth. Today in Russia there is only one Breast Milk Bank - in Moscow, in the Scientific Centre of Children's Health of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
