State Duma passed law banning strange names

UFA, 21 April 2017. /Bashinform News Agency, Olga Murtazina/. The deputies of the State Duma adopted in the third, final reading a bill prohibiting to include in the name of a child figures, signs, profanity and ranks, Vedomosti reports. 368 deputies voted in favour of it, one person - against, and one person abstained.
The law supposes making amendment to the Family Code of Russia. "By giving an unusual, exotic name to your child, parents do not always figure out what difficulties their son or daughter may face, especially in the children's collective", it was said in the explanatory note to the bill. The law, according to its authors, "will provide more effective state protection of constitutional rights and legally protected interests of minors in the name".
Initially, the bill proposed to exclude abbreviations as well, but in the end they were relieved from the ban as popular and became traditional in Bashkortostan, Tatarstan and other regions of the country.
