New method to diagnose brain tumours is started to apply in Bashkortostan

UFA, 21 December 2016. /Bashinform News Agency, Gulfiya Akulova/. In Ufa, the Nuclear Medicine Centre "PET Technology" introduced a new method for the diagnosis of brain tumours. The diagnosis is made through the use of a radiopharmaceutical based on fluorine - 18F-fluoroethyltyrosine. One of the first patients in the PET-centre with this technique applied was a teenager directed by the Republican Children's Hospital. Doctors suspected he had a malignant neoplasm of the cerebellum. Carrying out positron emission tomography allowed excluding dangerous diagnosis without surgical intervention.
Production of the new specific fluorine-based radiopharmaceutical will enhance possibilities to identify malignant brain structures, the regional Ministry of Health informs.
A CyberKnife system is installed at the PET centre for the radiosurgical treatment of brain tumours, which requires accurate diagnostic information. With the production of a new drug it became available. According to experts, in the future it is planned to expand the list of produced and used radiopharmaceuticals.
Since opening in May 2014 the Nuclear Medicine Centre has spent almost 10 thousand diagnostic procedures, high-tech medical care was rendered to about seven thousand people. The bulk of treatment was provided to patients free of charge under the state guarantees program.
