More than half of Bashkortostan schoolchildren have never been in libraries - poll

UFA, 25 November 2016. /Bashinform News Agency, Gulfiya Akulova/. More than 81 percent of Bashkortostan schoolchildren have never been in libraries. These are the findings of a poll among schoolchildren in social networks. The poll was conducted within the project "Test Drive at Ural Federal University".
Children and adolescents prefer the Internet to libraries when searching. In their opinion, outdated information can be found in book stores.
"With the advent of the Internet the need for libraries significantly decreased. Almost every school has a library, but they are empty. Children believe that the situation can be changed if all reading rooms will be equipped with the Internet access", the authors of the poll say. “But at the same time more than half of the children complain that it is not always possible to find reliable information in the World Wide Web".
The «Test Drive at Ural Federal University» campaign was organized by the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin "(UrFU) to attract talented high school pupils to the university and to assist them in the choice of future profession. The campaign is open to schoolchildren of the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, Kurgan, Orenburg and Perm regions, Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. As part of the project 10-11th graders during a winter break are offered to plunge into student life for two days, to meet with renowned scientists and to visit labs. At present, the selection of participants is completed, on December 5 the names of pupils to go to UrFU will be announced.
