Scientists discovered freshwater jellyfish in Bashkiria
UFA, 25 August 2016. /Bashinform News Agency, Eugeniya Syutkina/. In Bashkortostan, between the cities of Sterlitamak and Salavat, in one of the lakes the scientists discovered freshwater jellyfish. This was reported by a well-known ornithologist of Ufa, director of the Institute of Ecological Examination and Bioinformatics Technologies Victor Valuev.
"I had a call of the acting director of the Institute of Biology Ufa Science Centre RAS, Doctor of Biological Sciences Vasily Martynenko and he shared information about the presence of jellyfish in one of the lakes in the republic. I went to the city of Salavat, and the local resident Andrei Stepanov accompanied us to this lake. And really there are thousands of jellyfish in the lake. They are transparent, small - one or two centimeters in diameter. This finding can be rightfully called sensational", said the ornithologist.
According to Victor Valuev, now there is a search for professionals who will be able to determine what species of jellyfish are discovered. Requests to the Russian research institutes were sent. However, in Russia there are maybe no zoologists specializing in freshwater jellyfish.
It remains a mystery how jellyfish appeared in the Starica Lake in the floodplain of the River Belaya. Maybe they were here since the time when ocean lapped at the shore there. Read more on "i-gazeta".
