Displacement of Ural Mountains to the northeast does not affect the area of Bashkiria - Institute of Geology

Scientists of the Institute of Geophysics, Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences conducted a study of strain rate of the earth's surface near the Ural Mountains. They concluded that the Ural Range, Western Siberia and the Russian platform underlying the Russian (East European) Plain displace by two centimeters to the east and half a centimeter to the north every year. The measurements were made with the highest absolute precision at two tens of weather stations in Kurgan, Sverdlovsk, Tyumen and Chelyabinsk regions and Bashkortostan. According to ITAR-TASS, the researchers before the study expected a more inhomogeneous deformation.
“For 50 years we know that the plates are in motion”, the Deputy Director of the Institute of Geology, Ufa Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergei Kovalev said. “The thing is that there is general movement of the crust. Therefore, a shift of the Ural Mountain Range cannot affect the area of Bashkortostan.”
Movement of Ural Mountains does not bring major changes to the climate either.
