March 20 - Earth Day

The Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on March 20 by the UN initiative.

In Russia, this commemorative date is celebrated as part of days of protection from environmental hazards. Among the most popular events on this day in different parts of the planet are environmental exhibitions and festivals, marathons and conferences dedicated to nature issues, cleanup of streets and areas in cities, planting trees and stopping traffic on busy streets of major cities, cultural events and concerts.

By tradition, each year in the framework of the Earth Day in most countries people usually ring the Bell of Peace, which is a symbol of peaceful life, friendship and solidarity among all peoples and a call to act for the sake of preservation of culture and the best achievements of mankind.

In Bashkortostan this memorable date is marked in Ufa planetarium. The planetarium will show a documentary "Home" free of charge. The holiday traditionally begins with the sound of the Bells of Peace.

The film "Home" is a result of joint efforts by two masters of modern art — the world famous wildlife photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand and the cult film director Luc Besson. They have been shooting the film for half a year in more than 60 countries. It is one of the most expensive documentaries in the history of cinematography. It is meant not only to show the beauty of our planet, but also to make people think about what to expect the Earth and humanity in the near future.
