Paralympic Center in Ufa: problems can be solved

Dmitry Slezin
The President RB Rustem Khamitov has held a meeting re construction of the Paralympic training center in Ufa on April 19.
The honorable master of sport RF, sportsman – eyesight invalid Rimma Batalova, the director of the Center for eyesight invalids Gennady Dementiev, the sportsman with locomotorium disability Marat Usupov, the deputy head of the Presidential Administration RB Marat Mardanov, the vice-premiers Sergey Afonin and Zugura Rakhmatullina, the Minister of youth policy and sport RB Alexander Nikerin and the head of Ufa administration Paul Kachkaev have taken part in the gathering.
It should be noted that the capital of Bashkortostan was chosen the main site for construction of the all-Russian Paralympic Center and this right was given to the Republic first of all for the achievements of its Paralympic sportsmen.
As the Minister of youth policy and sport RB Alexander Nikerin mentioned the Center’s project was admitted as having no other analogues in the country. But there are different opinions.
“We’ve studied the project and concluded that training of sportsmen will be of secondary importance here. If the Center is meant for competitions, so where should we train?” – Rimma Batalova asked.
The participants of the gathering have come to the conclusion that the Center’s construction causes many questions, in particular, the safety of the sportsmen in case of any emergency situation: if a fire occurs in the building, all elevators will be blocked and people inside turn out to be the hostages of this situation.
One more question: what for and for whom this center should be erected? The sportsmen with disabilities say the stress should be laid on training of highly qualified Paralympic sportsmen for the national teams of Russia and not for the competitions.
The project is affirmed and it costs 2 billion 227 million rubles with the area 36 thousand square meters.
“The primary error is that the Center was designed not taking the opinion of the Paralympic sportsmen into account. It looks at least unethical” – the President RB summed up – “But the situation is not the dead-end and it isn’t yet too late to change everything”.
Finally the President RB has ordered to solve two main problems before April 30: first, the authorities have to discuss the project with the sportsmen and, second, the dislocation of the future center should be discussed too, taking the fact that this is the Paralympic Center first of all into account.
