Personal case of Ufa’s saint is discovered in Saint-Petersburg

Eugene Rakhimkulov
Very interesting documents were discovered at the Saint-Petersburg’s Christian Clerical Academy by one of its students in the process of investigation of the Ufa eparchy’s history. This is the personal case of the Reverend Archimandrite Moses Ufimsky.
The documents, related to 1953-1955, throw light on the years when Moses Ufimsky was a student of the Leningrad Clerical Academy. Earlier the news about this fact in the sources, telling about life of this saint, was absent and it was considered he never had a clerical education.
The documents not just bring new facts to the saint’s biography but demonstrate the moods of the after-war times and the whole complexity of the Russian Christian Church positions in the Soviet Union.
Moses Ufimsky (the real name was Nikolai Chigvintsev) was born in 1913 in Chelyabinsk region. In 1945 he was ordained by the Archbishop of Ufa and Bashkiria Johann. Since then he served at the Ufa Cathedral Church first as a sexton and later as a priest.
Moses Ufimsky has become famous among Christian adherents with his humility in his way of life and the rare ability to healing. He lived in the Cathedral’s basement, spending the majority of his life in prayers. At that he ate nothing except bread and vegetables. He slept on a trestle-bed, made of two boards and put the wooden billet under his head. He wore heavy tarpaulin boots any time of the year and was mainly occupied with physical activity.
The Archimandrite Moses was greatly respected far beyond the Ufa eparchy. He was received with honors in Kiev, Pskov and in the Trinity Monastery. Besides, it was considered the monk was able to heal people with the help of prayers and people from Bashkiria and other regions of the country and from Ukraine and Byelorussia came to ask him for help.
In the course of time Moses has become the confessor of the Ufa eparchy and later – the prior of Ufa Cathedral. He died in 1982 and was buried at Demskoe cemetery near Ufa in accordance with his will.
On May 29, 2001, Moses was ranked among the saints of Ufa eparchy. In 2002 his remains have been reburied at the Ufa Cathedral Church.
