Mari Pancake week was celebrated in Mishkinsky region RB

The Republican calendar-ceremonial festival “YARNA” has taken place in Mishkinsky region of Bashkortostan. Celebration of Mari Pancake week has taken place on the central square of the village MISHKINO and representatives of local Mari communities, including the public Mari national-cultural autonomy “Mari USHEM” RB, acquainted the numerous guests, including the heads of the Friendship House RB, with the national Mari traditions.

The festival’s program consisted of jolly games, sport competitions and tasting of traditional Mari cookery. Mari Pancake week-“YARNA”- is considered one of the most ancient feasts in the history of Mari nation and it has much in common with the Russian Pancake week. It is traditionally celebrated at the end of February – the beginning of March. The celebrities usually start on Monday and go on during one-two weeks. In the past “YARNA” was concerned with the winter Sun circulation. The ancient riots were directed to awakening of the nature and revival of the fertile powers of soil, reaching of economical prosperity and family well-being.
