Neurologists discussed problems of assistance to patients with incurable diseases

The Neurology Clinic of the Bashkir State Medical University has held a regular conference in the course of which doctors, residents, nurses and university students discussed the problems of assistance to patients with incurable diseases and their parents. Elena Lipatova, associate professor of psychology of the BSMU made a report on this subject. She covered the main aspects of work with patients and their relatives in it. Elena Lipatova mentioned that with the knowledge of the psychology of grief and the certain mechanisms of going through tough situations connected with loss of health one can make the work of specialists more competent and render the most effective assistance both to patients and to their relatives.
As the head of Neurology Clinic Leila Akhmadeeva said, "there are illnesses that we cannot cure, but there are no patients that we cannot help to". By the way, this phrase has been a motto of all doctors for many centuries.
Theoretical foundations for understanding of the psychology of an incurable patient with a serious illness were regarded and practical methods useful for a medical worker in such cases were demonstrated during the conference.
The participants of the conference found it very helpful and expressed hope that such meetings would become a common practice as in the best university clinics of the world.
