Catholic communities celebrate the Candlemas Day

The catholic communities of the country are celebrating one of the most ancient Christian feasts today – the Candlemas Day. The feast is set in the memory about the great event for all Christians –the meeting of baby-Jesus with the righteous monk Simeon in the Jerusalem’s Cathedral.
According to the Bible’s legend it had been forecasted to Simeon that he wouldn’t die until he meets Jesus Christ and when the parents had brought the baby Jesus to the church for consecrating Simeon came and took the baby in his hands and offered up a prayer that he reached this day.
In the Candlemas Day beginning from 11 o’clock in the evening it is accustomed to lit the candles in all churches. These candles personify the light of enlightenment, which Jesus had brought to all pagans.
In spite of its antiquity the Candlemas Day was celebrated without special celebrities in the majority of the countries before the IV century. But after the earthquake in Byzantium in 544, when the miseries stopped after the religious procession, held in the Candlemas Day, the greater importance was attached to the feast.
Russian Orthodox Church as well as the adherents of other churches, living by the Gregorian Calendar, will celebrate the Candlemas Day on February 15.
