Radiy Khabirov, the head of Bashkortostan, participated in a government commission meeting on road safety, which was held via videoconference by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Marat Khusnullin. The agenda included current road accident rates and measures to improve the situation in this area.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the country's president set the task of reducing road traffic fatalities by one and a half times by 2030 and by half by 2036.
“In our work on developing the country's road framework, our priority task is to improve road safety and save the lives of as many people as possible - drivers, passengers, pedestrians. Compared to last year, we see a small decrease in road traffic fatalities - by 0.7%. At the same time, I emphasize that maintaining such dynamics from year to year is becoming more difficult, given the objective reasons - a large increase in motorization and traffic intensity and a change in the direction of freight and passenger flows. Thus, on several federal highways, we see an increase in traffic intensity in certain sections from 10 to 100%; on average, the indicator has grown by 20-30% over the past few years. Therefore, our primary tasks are to maintain the positive dynamics in reducing road accidents and fatalities and systematically develop additional measures to improve the situation based on modern realities,” said Marat Khusnullin.
The meeting participants also discussed preparing a draft strategy for improving road safety in Russia, which will be synchronized with the new national project “Infrastructure for Life.”
Marat Khusnullin instructed the governors to take personal control of developing and implementing action plans to reduce accidents and fatalities due to road accidents and assess the dynamics of motorization growth in the regions. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that special attention should be paid to pedestrian safety and the prevention of child road traffic injuries. In Bashkortostan, 2,675 road accidents occurred on the republican roads in the first 11 months of 2024, which is 677 cases or 20.2% less than in the same period last year.
In 2024, 56 km of roads and bridges with a length of 200 linear meters were built and reconstructed to improve road safety in the republic, and eight bridges and 1,300 km of roads were brought to standard condition. In addition, 86 new traffic lights and 278 km of barrier and pedestrian fencing were installed, and 18,873 road signs were updated. 285-speed bumps were installed on the roadway, and 84 km of sidewalks and 308 km of artificial lighting were installed along the roads.
