Foreigners will be required to register for military service together with receiving Russian passport

State Duma deputies have adopted amendments to the laws "On military duty and military service" and "On Citizenship of the Russian Federation" regarding the fulfillment of military duty by persons who have received citizenship of the Russian Federation. Deputies headed by the Chairman of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, authored the amendments.

The law, as emphasized in the explanatory note, is aimed at the mandatory fulfillment by new citizens of Russia of the constitutional duty to defend the Fatherland.

"Currently, foreign citizens and stateless males who acquire citizenship of the Russian Federation and are of draft age are required to register for military service at their place of residence and comply with all requirements stipulated by federal law," the authors remind.

At the same time, there are widely publicized cases when, after receiving Russian citizenship, such persons evade fulfilling military duty. In this regard, failure to fulfill the obligation to register for military service initially will threaten the loss of Russian citizenship for foreigners who have received it.
